IThe sleek silhouette is noticeably missing from Volvo’s lineup, which currently consists mostly of SUVs. This applies on an aesthetic level, but also and especially on a technical level, the reduction of the frontal surface and therefore the aerodynamic drag being important to guarantee good autonomy for electric cars. This gap is now filled by the ES90 (WxWxH 5.00 x 1.94 x 1.55 m), the Swedish brand’s first battery-powered sedan. Thanks to a roof that is lowered by 19 cm compared to the EX90, the SUV that takes this platform, the ES90 sedan not only has a more elegant profile, but also offers greater range despite its slightly smaller battery.
300 km range is restored in 10 minutes of charging
Thus, the ES90 Single with a rear engine of 333 hp which has an accumulator with a capacity of 88 kWh, and the Twin-wheel drive twin engine with 449 hp (or even 680 hp in the Performance version) which has 102 kWh respectively promise a range of 650 and 700 km. Even better, thanks to an electrical architecture operating at 800V, this large Swedish road car can theoretically recharge from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes at a fast terminal, or rather recover up to 300 km of range in just 10 minutes of connection. Enough to calmly consider several long-distance trips and compete technically with the Audi A6 e-tron Sportback.
Small front trunk 22 liters
Simple and refined, the ES90’s interior features excellent manufacturing quality, befitting the brand’s reputation in this area. In the center of the dash is a large 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen that brings together almost all of the car’s functions down to opening the glove box, which isn’t always practical. The huge wheelbase of 3.10 m guarantees ample legroom in the rear seats thanks to the electrically reclining backrests. It can also be folded to adjust boot volume from 446 to 1,256 litres, complemented by a 22-litre storage space hidden under the front bonnet for storing charging cables.

Answer
Stunning and heavy at 2,441 kg in Single version, the ES90 is not a sports car. Highly soundproof and mounted on a pneumatic spring suspension that gently absorbs road undulations, it is best enjoyed in a smooth ride, if possible on well-surfaced roads, its large wheels tend to cause jitters on poor surfaces. Assembled in China at Volvo’s Chengdu plant, the ES90 is priced from 75,900 euros for the Single Extended Range version, and 93,050 euros for the Twin four-wheel drive version.
