Ceatalchioi and Plauru are located along the Danube, on the border with Ukraine. This Monday, two villages in Romania were evacuated. The first was caused by a fire on a ship laden with LPG and a Russian drone attack.
“The evacuation of Ceatalchioi residents was ordered using minibuses,” the emergency services said in a press release, regarding the area with a population of less than 300 people. Due to the “closeness” of the fire, residents were also evacuated from the hamlet of Plauru, located opposite the Ukrainian port of Izmail, where a civilian ship flying a Turkish flag and carrying gas was hit, according to Kyiv.
Emergency services clarified that this was a “precautionary measure”. “Due to the imminent danger of an explosion,” Romanian authorities also suspended road and naval traffic in the region.
According to the Romanian Defense Ministry, which is a NATO country, “no airspace violations were detected” following the nighttime “Russian attack” in Ukraine.
Ukrainian ports, Moscow’s favorite target
Since the start of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian ports on the Danube, triggering alarms in Romania.
On Friday, Romania’s Foreign Ministry announced the summons of the Russian ambassador following the discovery of drone fragments on its territory. “He was provided with concrete evidence of violations of Romanian airspace by unmanned aerial vehicles belonging to Russian military forces,” he said in a statement.
The Russian Embassy in Bucharest described the summons as a “show” in a message published on Telegram, denying “any speculation regarding alleged deliberate violations of Romania’s territorial integrity and any threats to its security from Russia.”
