Sudan’s army rejected international proposals for a ceasefire on Sunday

In Sudan’s civil war, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have declared a three-month humanitarian ceasefire. This happened because of international efforts, especially those of US President Donald Trump, RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo said in a speech on Monday.
The ceasefire appears to be one-sided: Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan rejected a similar proposal on Sunday. Initially there was no statement from the military.
Hunger, violence, displacement – the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to worsen. After the RSF militia took over the city of Al-Fashir, supplies in many places were on the verge of collapse.

Peace efforts stalled
There have been efforts to reach a peace deal for Sudan for months – so far without success.
On Sunday, Sudan’s military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan rejected a ceasefire proposal made by the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, calling it “the worst.”
He accused the mediator of being “biased” because of the participation of the United Arab Emirates, which is often accused of supporting the RSF militia. The latest proposal from international mediators, according to al-Burhan, is to “abolish the army, disband the security agencies and keep the militias where they are.”
In September, Sudan’s military-controlled government rejected a ceasefire proposal that would have excluded the RSF army and militia from politics.
In the civil war-torn country of Sudan in North Africa, the struggle for power between the army and the RSF militia is intensifying. Since Al-Fashir’s arrest, reports of atrocities have increased.

Twelve million refugees due to civil war
There has been war in Sudan since a power struggle between the military and the influential RSF militia escalated in April 2023.
According to the World Health Organization, the fighting has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced around 12 million people. Aid organizations assume that the actual number of victims could be much higher.
