Karim Adeyemi did not feature against Slovakia. However, the BVB professional is a problem – because of its legal problems.
After Monday night’s win at the ZDF, the DFB’s sporting directors said they were “critical” of Adeyemi, but stressed: “But of course we don’t want to condemn him either. Young players make mistakes, in this case stupid mistakes.”
As reported by the newspaper “Bild”, the attacking player is said to have received a penalty notice for possession of illegal weapons a few weeks ago. WDR confirmed the information and problems with the judiciary. Public prosecutor Hagen confirmed to both media outlets that a criminal warrant had been issued against Adeyemi on charges of possessing prohibited items under the Arms Act.
The weapons said to be brass knuckles and a Taser. Both were discovered on the BVB player in the summer of 2024. Adeyemi’s lawyer explained to Bild that the incident was related to a surprise package that the BVB professional player ordered via TikTok. There these packages are called “Mystery Boxes”. Buyers don’t know what they are buying until they unpack the package.
The German Football Association wants to handle the case “peacefully” together with Borussia Dortmund. “I know from Dortmund, they have it under control and will continue to pursue it. Of course we do too,” explained Völler.
Together with national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Völler has spoken with the 23 year old player. “We wanted to hear his version. He then tried to explain it to us.” The DFB only learned about the incident on Saturday, one day after the match in Luxembourg (2-0).
Katrin Müller-Hohenstein asked Völler if Adeyemi hadn’t said anything before? Völler now says on ZDF: “No, because of course he hopes it won’t come out. That’s logical.”
Völler was reluctant to say whether Adeyemi should fear punishment from the DFB. “I don’t want to anticipate that now. It will happen,” said the 1990 world champion and added: “You have to punish sometimes. But of course it’s important to give a hug to players like that.”
Adeyemi also received support from his BVB teammate Nico Schlotterbeck. The defender said after the DFB team’s win: “That’s not really my topic. I’ve known Karim for a long time. He’s had to deal with it. But I can say that he’s a great kid and a good person. You don’t always have to believe everything that’s said.”
