Every third accident in Hesse ends in a hit-and-run. To avoid the possibility of accidents occurring unnoticed, those responsible must comply with several rules, he stressed ADAC Hesse-Thuringia. For example, leaving a note behind a damaged vehicle’s windshield is not enough. “By law, you must wait a reasonable period of time. How long depends on each individual case,” explained press spokesman Oliver Reidegeld.
At night in a residential area, it couldn’t be assumed the owner would appear that quickly. In this case it becomes direct POLICE to communicate. “Longer waiting times in supermarket car parks or in car parks are clearly acceptable.” Deadline pressure is no excuse. “The same applies here: When in doubt, call the police.” If an accident occurs that results in personal injury, first aid is still mandatory. “You should also wait for the police and rescue workers.”
