Sant Pau hospital will perform surgical abortions in Dos de Maig starting this month | News from Catalonia

The Gynecology and Obstetrics service of the Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona will have, starting next Monday, November 16, a space to carry out surgical abortions at the Dos de Maig Hospital, the hospital informed Europa Press. Medical teams at the hospital will practice this procedure again after discontinuing it in 2012 for religious reasons, which was the cause of complaints and protests from feminist groups, Diari de Barcelona reported on Monday.

The head of the unit, Elisa Llurba, specified that since the legislative change of 2023 – which provides that public centers must offer this practice – they have begun to carry out the procedures to offer the service. Liurba assures that the hospital does not perform abortions within the structure due to “logistical problems” and because they do not have sufficient capacity and space, and underlines that 80% of medical hospitalization and gynecology services are not objectors. “We have had a large outpatient surgery operating theater in Dos de Maig for two or three years and we have been trying to get this business there. Two years after the request for administrative authorization, we have had it since July,” he noted.
