SC Freiburg celebrates an important home win. On the other hand, the series is negative towards St. Pauli has reached historic proportions.
SC Freiburg beats FC St. Newly promoted Pauli finished 2-1 on Sunday afternoon and celebrated their third win of the season in the Bundesliga. However, the opponents’ negative series reached historic proportions. Hamburg suffered its seventh defeat in a row on matchday 10. The club’s negative record from 1997 and 2011 has now been recorded.
Japan’s Yuito Suzuki with his first Bundesliga goal (40th) and Maximilian Eggestein (50th) scored for the Breisgau side, who regained three points after five league games without a win. After the international break, SC had to play against league leaders Bayern Munich. Pauli remained deep in the dungeon. Louis Oppie’s goal (69) didn’t change that. Hamburg didn’t score in 488 minutes.
“It’s about the basics that make us strong. We need stability,” said Pauli coach Alexander Blessin shortly before kick-off on DAZN: “We want to show a reaction.” Sports director Andreas Bornemann confirmed that there is still “a way to go” for the Hamburg team to reach the crisis. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster said that “the large number of draws” annoyed him: “We have to force the percentage of points lost.”
Christian Günter should help with this. The captain, who had long lost his regular place, was in the starting line-up and became Freiburg’s new player of record. Full-back Günter has played 441 competitive games for the sporting club since Sunday – one more than Andreas Zeyer.
The hosts dominated the game in the first few minutes against a defensive Hamburg side. However, Freiburg was initially unable to create a goal-scoring opportunity. That changed in the 14th minute: Jan-Niklas Beste’s effort from close range was saved by Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Overall, the Breisgau team didn’t think much about attacking; The Hanseatic League almost didn’t let anything happen.
After half an hour, the meeting finally became boring. Like handball, Freiburg played around the Hamburg penalty area without being able to appear decisive. Suzuki’s goal appeared suddenly. The 24-year-old took advantage of Vasilj’s weak defense after a corner kick with a direct shot.
At the start of the second half nothing had changed. Pauli persisted and his passivity was immediately punished by Eggestein. Despite nothing from the visitors after that, Freiburg brought Hamburg back into the game with some weak defensive action – Oppie had them to thank.
