Serpil Midyatli retires as SPD leader in Schleswig-Holstein. He informed the state executive council today that he would relinquish the post of state chairman and suggest Kiel Mayor Ulf Kampf as his successor, according to a letter from the politician to SPD members, which was made available to the German Press Agency.
The SPD North wants to contest the 2027 state election with Kampf as the top candidate. In the members’ vote, he clearly won with 79.76 percent against state leader SPD (20.24 percent), as the party reported at the weekend.
Midyatli further wrote: “Ulf and I agree that we want to hand over the leadership of the country in an orderly manner. In February 2026, the extraordinary conference of the state party will elect a new chairman. Until then, Ulf, as the top candidate, will make all the necessary preparations now. And I will see to it that a good transition can be realized.”
Secretary of State Environmental Fighters in Habeck
This 53 year old fighter is a former Minister of the Environment under Schleswig-Holstein Environment Minister Robert Habeck (Green Party). He has served as Mayor of Kiel since 2014, but does not want to run again as head of government in the city.
6,228 SPD members in the north cast their votes in the membership decision. This number includes 6,157 valid votes. According to the party, this means that the results are binding on delegates to the party-list conference.
There was a commotion in Kiel over the Green Party’s development application, which was approved by a vote of the AfD.
