On strike since November 10 to demand mass teacher recruitment, extracurricular leaders of Paris schools have renewed their movement in a way that “infinite” with different modalities, AFP learns from Supap-FSU, the origins of the movement with CFDT and CGT, Thursday 20 November.

The strike will impact after school hours on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, but not the canteen, “taking into account the difficulties faced by the family”said Elise Rabdeau, of Supap-FSU. “We will continue the strike until the central city hall accepts us”union officials said, noting that the strike notice was valid until December 31.

Patrick Bloche, socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo’s first deputy in charge of education, would welcome the union “at a date yet to be determined”according to city hall. “Between 100 and 200 schools” out of 620 people in the capital had to close their canteens in recent days, according to Supap-FSU. This city has one too “opened hundreds of companies despite staffing levels being much lower than in normal times”he complained. According to city hall, only 48 canteens were closed on Wednesday.

The union is demanding permanent hiring in a sector that has only 2,500 assistant facilitators and 1,000 contract facilitators, compared with 8,500 temporary workers. The sector has also been shaken by a series of investigations into alleged sexual violence in educational institutions. The city of Paris has announced plans to combat sexual violence against children in schools.
