Preparation services for prospective ex-intern teachers take place in Hesse longer than in most other states – but that could change. According to the Education and Science Union (GEW), states plan to streamline prep services.

Preparatory services in Hesse lasted 21 months. The longest period in Bavaria is 24 months, the shortest in Brandenburg is 12 months, and in most countries it is 18 months. In a national comparison, Hesse was 2.6 months above average, according to the ministry.
“The shortening to 18 months means schools can benefit from fully trained teachers with the second state exam three months in advance,” the Culture Ministry said on request. This also means less organizing effort as fewer years are in training at the same time, and young teachers will earn an income earlier.
