Serious accident on the A57 between Worringen and Chorweiler: A man was trapped in his car. Even helicopters had to rush to help.
A driver was seriously injured in a serious road accident on the A57 towards Cologne on Tuesday evening. Around 20.15. a car and a truck collided between the junction of Worringen and Chorweiler. The force of the impact caused the car to flip sideways.
The Cologne fire department received several emergency calls shortly after the accident. Very explosive: As “Express” reported, one of the calls appeared to come directly from the crashed vehicle. But it was impossible to communicate with the person on the other end of the phone, Susanne Hörle, a spokeswoman for the Cologne fire department, told the newspaper. The contact was eventually lost.
When the first rescue team arrived at the crash site, they saw a dramatic scene: the car tilted and the driver trapped in the wreckage. A blessing in disguise: two employees of an aid organization who happened to be passing by in an ambulance had administered first aid and were treating seriously injured people.
Worringen volunteer firefighters arrived with heavy equipment. To free the man, emergency services first put the vehicle back on its wheels. They then opened the roof of the wreckage to get to the injured people. At the same time, the control center requested a rescue helicopter. “Because our rescue helicopter was tied up on another mission, it came from Dortmund,” fire department spokesman Hörle explained to “Express”. The helicopter immediately landed at the scene at around 21.10.
After initial treatment, an ambulance took the seriously injured man to a clinic. The truck driver fled in shock and was not injured. Three witnesses who witnessed the accident were shocked and received treatment from emergency services. However, they do not need to be hospitalized.
Around 40 fire and rescue services were deployed with 14 vehicles. Work at the accident site continued until 21.45. The motorway remained closed for hours between Worringen and Chorweiler, and traffic had been diverted to the Dormagen junction. According to ADAC, the closure had not been lifted as of 1:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. It is still unclear how the collision occurred. The police are investigating it.
