Sheinbaum’s offensive in the state of Michoacán leaves five detainees linked to the Jalisco cartel in three days

The Government of Mexico’s new pacification plan for the State of Michoacán has already begun to show its significance. Over the past three days, federal authorities have arrested five people – two of them minors – allegedly linked to the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel in Buenavista, in the northeast of the territory. The information, released by the Security Cabinet on the networks, indicates that between 6 and 9 November the authorities also seized 330 kilograms of synthetic drugs.

The operations, conducted jointly by the Ministry of Defense and the National Guard, also led to the confiscation of 52 kilograms of explosives, weapons and 10 vehicles. “The Army, Air Force and National Guard reaffirm the federal government’s firm decision to crack down on the activities of organized crime,” reads the publication on X. The captured people have already been made available to the relevant authorities.

The murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo on November 1 at the hands of a 17-year-old boy allegedly linked to the CJNG represented a watershed moment for Michoacan society. Thousands of people took to the streets in the following days to demand justice for the mayor, but also to shout against the security crisis affecting the territory. The complaints soon reached the National Palace. On Sunday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced her peace plan for Michoacán. His security secretary, Omar García Harfuch, described the issue as “a national priority”.
