Shock in Cologne: Ventilator manipulated – 32-year-old man is said to have killed a fellow patient at the clinic

At a clinic in Cologne, a 32-year-old man is said to have killed a 75-year-old patient in the intensive care unit. To do this, the man “interacted with a fellow patient’s ventilator,” police and the district attorney’s office said. The police have formed a hit squad.

The two men lay next to each other in the intensive care unit. The crime occurred on Saturday night. “Despite immediate medical attention, the 75-year-old man later died,” investigators said. The 32-year-old man was detained in a ward by hospital staff and then transferred to another clinic under police guard.

On Sunday, at the request of the public prosecutor, the district court ordered the defendant to be temporarily placed in a rehabilitation center. “There are concrete indications that he could have committed the crimes he is accused of against the background of alcoholic delirium while incapacitated and further harm to others cannot be ruled out,” police and the prosecutor’s office said. Authorities have not provided further details about the suspect.
