Shots in the US capital
Hegseth: 500 more National Guardsmen for Washington
Shots were fired in the middle of downtown Washington. Two National Guardsmen were seriously injured. US President Donald Trump’s administration immediately reacted.
After the shooting of the National Guard in Washington, hundreds of other troops will be relocated to the capital. US President Donald Trump has instructed him to send 500 additional National Guard troops, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said. He will take the necessary steps.
Moments earlier, a gunman opened fire not far from the White House. According to authorities, two National Guard soldiers were in critical condition. A suspect was arrested.
More than 2,000 National Guard troops have been deployed in Washington. Trump ordered them to the capital in the summer to take action against an alleged rise in crime. Crime statistics do not support this narrative. Hegseth now insists that the operation has made the city safer. The attack on the city center “will only strengthen” the government’s “resolve,” he said.
