Starting a career: Many young people consider several educational paths

A third of the younger generation in Germany have not chosen any educational path after graduating from school. Researchers are calling for more comprehensive career guidance.

According to the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research (IAB), a third of young people in Germany have not yet decided whether they want to continue training, a degree or a technical qualification after leaving school. In a study involving 6,300 participants, the IAB surveyed the younger generation of graduates of all types of high schools. All participants had utilized career advice from employment agencies.

IAB researcher Silke Anger said: “Many young people think about their professional future from an early age, but at the same time often still have several options open.” This can mean openness but also uncertainty and requires a more comprehensive career orientation in the future.

In contrast, two-thirds of the younger generation are confident in their decision.
