For the country’s 80th birthday Schleswig-Holstein Next year there will be no big community festival like the one marking the 75th anniversary. Instead, the anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year with various events in the country, as “Kieler Nachrichten” reports. According to the newspaper, when asked by the SPD parliamentary group about the draft budget for 2026, the State Chancellor said that 50,000 euros were planned for projects related to “80 years of Schleswig-Holstein”.
Planning for 2026 is underway
According to the report, the Chancellor of State’s response was: “To save costs,” a smaller ceremony with individual events and activities was planned across the country as opposed to a large civic festival. “The concrete plan will be presented at the beginning of 2026,” said State Chancellor Dirk Schrödter (CDU).
The country was founded on 23 August 1946 after the Second World War, when the British military government created the state of Schleswig-Holstein from the Prussian province. In 2021, Schleswig-Holstein celebrated its 75th anniversary as a state with a colorful civic festival and ceremony at Gottorf Castle.
Kudos to a more frugal celebration
According to information from the Office of the State Chancellery, the costs at that time amounted to around 350,000 euros, as further reported by “Kieler Nachrichten”. According to the report, the Taxpayers Association applauded the decision to celebrate its anniversary this time on a smaller scale.
