Of Gary’s importance Peanuts Mounfield, who has died at the age of 63, reports to British Music the numerous messages sent this morning by musicians on their social networks. They can all be summed up in what Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wrote: “I am totally shocked and absolutely devastated to hear the news about Mani, my hero.” The announcement of the death of the bassist first of the Stone Roses and then of Primal Scream was made by his family through social networks. His brother, Greg Mounfield, posted a photo of the musician on Facebook with his wife Imelda, who died of cancer in 2023, and wrote: “With a heavy heart, I must announce the sad passing of my brother Gary.” He was 63 years old and the family did not reveal the cause of death. The times reports that the bassist died at his home in Stockport, north-west England, after “collapsing”. Mani had recently announced an extended speaking tour of the UK, from September 2026 to June 2027, to review his artistic career.
Mounfield was part of the rock band The Stone Roses from 1987 to 1996 and participated in two of their official albums. After the group disbanded, he was part of other bands and finally joined the Scottish group Primal Scream, where he remained until 2011. That year he reunited with the Roses when they performed live again.
Given the death of the bassist, Ian Brown, lead singer of the Stone Roses, posted on the social network X: “Rest in peace Mani X”. Happy Mondays singer Rowetta assured: “I will miss you very much. All my love to the boys, family and everyone who knew and loved him.” Tim Burgess, of The Charlatans, greeted him with: “One of the best in every way; a dear friend.”
