Telekom clearly won the mobile network test in Hamburg. All three providers received top marks – but O2 was clearly weak in one discipline.

Deutsche Telekom won a mobile network test conducted by trade magazine Connect in Hamburg. This emerges from data from specialist magazines, previously available exclusively to the t-online editorial team in Hamburg. With 593 out of 600 possible points, the Bonn-based company clearly beats the competition in Germany’s second largest city. Vodafone follows in second place with 582 points, while O2/Telefónica occupies third place with 570 points.

However the results were encouraging as all three service providers: Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica all achieved the top rating of “excellent”. The test evaluates three categories – voice, data, and crowdsourced analysis of real user operations.

An excellent picture emerged in terms of sound quality: Telekom and Vodafone each achieved a full score of 162 points. Telefónica, on the other hand, is far behind with just 152 points. The reason lies simply in the so-called drive test, where the quality of the network is measured while driving through the city. Here O2 only achieved 92 percent of the points possible, while the competition achieved 100 percent. In the walk test, which is a measurement by walking, all three providers got full points.

In the data category, Telkom also excelled with 285 out of 288 points. The gap between Vodafone (279 points) and Telefónica (277 points) is only two points. In crowdsourcing, which evaluates network coverage, data speed, latency, stability and availability of HD phones for a large number of users, Telekom again leads with 146 out of 150 points. Vodafone and Telefónica are tied here with 141 points each.

Evaluation by district shows that the three network operators in Hamburg have their own local bases. Telekom dominates in districts such as Eimsbüttel, Fuhlsbüttel, Finkenwerder and Bergedorf. Vodafone operates in Duvenstedt, Langenhorn, Rissen and Harburg, among others. O2/Telefónica is out front at Iserbrook, Osdorf, St. Pauli, Wilhelmsburg and other districts.
