Pinned down by the anti-corruption association Anticor, the former deputy mayor of Compiègne (Oise), Oumar Ba, was found guilty of embezzlement of public funds this Tuesday, November 25. The court sentenced him to a 120-day fine of 20 euros, or 3,000 euros, ineligible for three years with provisional execution and entry on his criminal record B2. He must also pay 800 euros to Anticor, which has filed a civil lawsuit.

Anticor investigated the case last year, uncovering huge telephone bills that in some months reached the amount of 12,680 euros on the mobile phones of its elected officials. “He used the town hall telephone while abroad, campaigning for legislative elections in the 9th constituency of French citizens living abroad that unites the Maghreb and Africa in the Oise. Between April and June 2022, he spent 9,825 euros on internet use alone. He knew what he was doing,” said Clarence Bathia, lawyer at Anticor.
