Will HE soon find a new sport for himself?
When you think of Andre Schürrle (35), some will certainly look immediately at his historic sprint along the baseline and his incredible assist to Mario Götze for the decisive 1-0 win in the World Cup final against Argentina in Brazil. Schürrle ended his career in 2020 and has since become an extreme athlete, entrepreneur, and now also an MMA fan.
Andre Schürrle makes an interesting comparison between football and MMA
Because on Saturday night the 2014 world champion will be a guest at SAP Garden, at Octagon 80 (live on RTL+) and is really looking forward to the fight between Alexander Poppeck and David Hosek. Also because he supports Poppeck with its new energy drink “Dryll”.
This was also Schürrle’s first time attending an MMA event. “I didn’t really know what to expect. I have friends who also fight and I know guys like Stephan Pütz and Max Coga who have told me a lot. But coming here and seeing this cage, it’s pretty cool.”

However, the former BVB star who won the DFB Cup with Dortmund in 2017 also has great respect for fighters. “I find it very interesting to get into the fighters’ locker rooms and understand the psychology behind it.” What he meant above all was preparation. He also sees similarities and comparisons with football. “The players came from a month-long camp, have given everything and sacrificed to be there now. That’s a comparison you also have in football.”

Andre Schürrle admires MMA stars
“I didn’t understand it until a few years ago. But now I understand what it means.” With weight cutting, you first have to reach a certain weight, which usually happens through excessive drinking and then sweating – until you hit the scale the day before the fight. After that, fighters usually try to gain as much weight as possible in a short time.
“I think the hardest thing for a top athlete is to be in a situation like that and then have to fight the next day.”
Let’s see if we can see Andre Schürrle in the cage someday…
*By the way: The first fight is quite interesting. For example, Gökhan Aksu won against Denis Frimpong and was then celebrated by the audience and his fans.
