“The Danish Deception”: the incredible spoof of a former “Bachelorette” candidate’s feelings that has taken TikTok by storm

A love story punctuated from start to finish by lies. American Oneyka Ehie has been trolling TikTok since November 14, when she started telling how a man she married then cheated her out of several hundred thousand dollars. This story, told in about thirty videos and entitled “The Danish Scam” (“Danish Fraud”)quickly fascinated Internet users and garnered more than 20 million views on Chinese social networks.

The former participant of “The Bachelor” in the United States was revealed in the 23rd season of the program, in 2019. Now 31 years old, he then started a career in real estate and lives in Dallas, Texas, with his family, from Nigeria. It all started in June 2022 when he went on holiday to Croatia with a friend. There, he met a young man who immediately became friendly with him, a Danish national.

Trip to the Côte d’Azur all expenses paid

They quickly exchanged their contact details on Instagram and began a relationship during this stay, before “goodbye”. But after a few weeks, his partner, whose name he did not reveal, offered to come and join him for a few days, all expenses paid in Monaco. There, she tells him that she loves him. He only responded hours later, when he was in hospital after feeling unwell.

The young man, whose identity was quickly discovered and revealed by internet users, then offered to give him a gift of his choice. Oneyka Ehie later learned that Martin enjoyed a comfortable financial situation as a handball player, but did not want him because of his money. Although he had offered her a much more expensive purchase, she said she gave up on the sunglasses at 200 dollars, about 175 euros. Subsequently, they also spent holidays in Saint-Tropez or Ibiza, each time in luxury hotels.

A handball bronze medal… that doesn’t exist

In the process, the man came to Dallas to meet his partner’s friends and family. He then began to uncover an impressive web of lies: a handball player, Martin would participate twice in the Olympics and win gold and bronze medals, would now be an investor in real estate, and was related to the Danish royal family. However, the Danish men’s handball team has never won a bronze medal at the Olympics.

After two months, the lovebirds started talking about their future together, while Oneyka still lives in Dallas and her partner has been living in Copenhagen for several years for his work. He mentioned plans to come to the United States, because the young woman was very close to her family. This is where the trap starts to close in on him.

The first payment is $6,000

In the fall of 2022, he talked to her for the first time about money problems when he had to make repairs to the apartment he managed. Job cost: $50,000. Oneyka then wanted to help him in any way possible as thanks for all he had given her during their journey. He finally agreed that he pay her 6,000 dollars, a little more than 5,000 euros.

This first payment was followed by dozens of other payments, for various reasons. In the end, the young woman unknowingly financed her partner’s lifestyle by $30,000. But he agreed to pay her back, of course, and ended up living with her in Dallas. He even obtained a “green card”, a kind of entry permit for foreign citizens in the United States. This couple even got engaged in April 2024.

Up to 300,000 euros was stolen from a friend, before the divorce

Except when it came down to it, despite the warning signs, Oneyka Ehie became disillusioned as time went on. She discovered that the man she married was actually a gambling addict and that he wasn’t the only person who borrowed money from her: the former reality TV candidate’s parents and sister were also bribed to the tune of several thousand dollars.

Martin even convinced a friend of his wife to invest $300,000 in cryptocurrency for him, an amount he lost entirely. Others close to the real estate professional told him they had lost $200,000. Oneyka itself did not provide an exact amount, but it is estimated at several hundred thousand dollars. When she questioned his lie, he finally left her.

The thirty-year-old woman announced her separation from her Danish husband in September. He said he no longer communicates with her today and their divorce proceedings were finalized in early November, allowing him to reveal his story on social networks.
