The “death tax”: cruel bank charges in inheritance matters, is over!

This story moved all of France. The parents of Léo, a 9-year-old boy who died of cancer in 2021, were furious when they discovered that their bank had taken an inheritance fee of 138 euros to cover his booklet A. “An inhumane practice,” his mother later denounced.

Four years later, legislation went into effect on Thursday, November 13 to regulate for the first time the practice considered a “death tax.” Adopted last May and supported by PS MP Christine Pirès-Beaune, this text specifies in what cases and in what amounts, banking institutions can charge so-called “legacy” fees.
