To better understand the role of gut microbiota throughout life, the French Gut pilot project announced, Friday, November 21, the launch of “French Gut Kids”, a variation aimed at young people. The goal is to collect and analyze stool samples from 10,000 children and adolescents aged 3 to 17, both sick and healthy, by 2029.
Comprising approximately 50,000 billion bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, the microbiota is now recognized as a key player in our health. It interacts with the immune, neurological, digestive systems… and its imbalance is associated with many things pathologies, such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, or even neuropsychiatric diseases, such as depression. But this ecosystem still little known.
Launched in September 2022, the French Gut project, led by the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Inrae) and Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), and supported by government and private partners, aims to collect 100,000 stool samples by 2029, including 10,000 from children and teenagers.
