Rome, November 24 – (Adnkronos) – “Not only the presence, but also the work carried out by the Ombudsman to protect citizens’ right to health is fundamental. Unfortunately, today, too many citizens, even in our region, cannot access treatment. For various reasons: from economic problems, to difficulties, to long waiting lists.” This was expressed by Rodolfo Lena, member of the regional council and vice president of the Health and Social Policy Commission of the Lazio Region, at the conference ‘The Ombudsman as Guarantor of the Right to Health: what possible scenarios’, held in the Mechelli Room of the Lazio Regional Council in Rome. This initiative encourages reflection on the role of the Ombudsman in protecting the right to health. Inspired by the Gelli-Bianco Law (n. 24/2017), this law explores the functions and responsibilities of the Guarantor of the right to health and aims to encourage dialogue between institutions, experts and citizens to identify concrete tools that make the protection of this fundamental right more effective.
“There is a serious problem, we are talking about almost 700 thousand residents in our region who cannot get treatment – explains Lena – the Ombudsman is an important link between the needs of citizens and the need to provide health services to our citizens in the region. Therefore, the work it does is very important to reconcile supply and demand”.
“We are now a country made up of elderly people, there is a significant decline in the birth rate in our region, but the younger generation is not our future, they are our present and therefore they must take part in the problems, topics and problems that society experiences on a daily basis. Therefore, helping them, and making them understand exactly what difficulties there are in accessing public services and entering a difficult healthcare system is essential for building their present and future”, he concluded.
