The last period of the year is approaching with Turkey, pilgrimages and the long-awaited December holidays. After the long weekend of November 17th, to commemorate the anniversary of the Revolution, the SEP calendar includes the delivery of grades and report cards from the 24th to the 27th of the same month and a short December that will last until the 19th.

The Ministry of Education (SEP) has established this calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. This educational year will last 185 days, five less than previous cycles, thanks to the inclusion of an additional week of holidays. The measure was promoted by Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, to improve the working conditions of teachers. The calendar will be valid for all public and private schools included in the national education system.

December holidays

The last day of lessons will be December 19th and, according to the school calendar, holidays will begin on the 22nd of the same month. The holiday covers the two mandatory days of rest, December 25th and January 1st. Students return on January 12th, while an intensive laboratory is scheduled for January 7th for staff with managerial functions; while an intensive workshop aimed at teaching staff will be held on 8 and 9 January.

Vacation

The first holiday of the school term will be Tuesday 16 September, on the occasion of Mexican Independence Day. Unlike other holidays, this one is not beaten and September 15th is not a public holiday. There will therefore be no official bridge, although some institutions are evaluating it internally.

Work will also be suspended on other official holidays such as Mexican Revolution Day, which this year falls on Monday 17 November. No lessons will also be held on December 25, January 1, 2026, Monday February 2 (for the anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution) and Monday March 16 (early due to the birth of Benito Juárez). The May holidays will fall on the 1st, 5th and 15th, marking Labor Day, the Battle of Puebla and Teachers’ Day respectively.

Likewise, the head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced that June 11, 2026 will be a public holiday in the capital for the inauguration of the FIFA World Cup.

Easter holidays

The Easter holidays begin on March 30th and lessons resume on April 13th.

End of the school year

The last day will be July 15th, which marks the start of the summer holidays.

Other important dates

As already established, on the last Friday of each month the teachers will meet to review and analyze the curriculum. This activity is part of the meetings of the School’s Technical Council and the intensive continuous training workshops. This year there is also a sexual abuse and child abuse awareness day, scheduled for September 8.

Pre-registrations

The pre-enrolment procedure will take place from 3 to 13 February 2026 for students who want to access the 2026-2027 school year in nursery school, the first class of primary school and the first class of secondary school.

When did the school year start?

Classes are scheduled to start on Monday 1 September 2025, as part of the adjustments made to integrate the additional week of rest announced by the authorities in May. “(In Mexico) they leave in July and come in in August, just over a month of vacation, and the teachers have less because when the school calendar ends they stay to work and arrive earlier, so we propose an extra week because they deserve it,” Sheinbaum said in a press briefing.
