The Association of Prosecutors (AF), the majority in this race, published this Monday a statement in which it regrets the statements of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in his interview with EL PAÍS, where he defended the innocence of the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, who is on the bench of the Supreme Court accused of an alleged crime of revealing secrets.
“The Association of Prosecutors wants to demonstrate that constitutional institutions must act with neutrality and therefore regrets that the President of the Government, in an interview with EL PAÍS, interfered in the judging function which belongs exclusively to the Supreme Court, which must carry out a conscientious evaluation of the evidence and clues found in the minutes and those carried out in oral proceedings”, state the prosecutors in a note.
They therefore believe that Sánchez’s words are intended to delegitimize the courts and put pressure on judges and prosecutors: “Trying to usurp these functions is not in line with the constitutional principles that govern the rule of law and only intend to put pressure on and delegitimize the courts,” they underline. The statement concludes with the warning that both institutions and those who lead them “must respect each other” and “respect the citizens to whom they are responsible.”
“I have faith in justice and I believe that the truth will eventually prevail in these two cases. And in the case that occupies the front pages and the debate this week, which is the trial against the State Attorney General, because the Government continues to believe in his innocence, and even more so after everything that has been seen,” Sánchez told EL PAÍS in an interview published on Sunday.
