In the latest survey, Friedrich Merz’s performance is not good. The majority not only want a new chancellor candidate in 2029, but also a younger one.

A new survey puts Chancellor Friedrich Merz under pressure in two ways. Therefore, only 18 percent of Germans would welcome a CDU politician running for chancellor again. These are the results of a survey by the opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL/ntv which is said to be representative.

As a result, 74 percent of respondents surveyed would not welcome Merz’s candidacy again at the next regular federal election in 2029. Among CDU and CSU supporters, 41 percent also reject the candidacy – 47 percent support it.

One of the criticisms of those surveyed was of course the age of Friedrich Merz, who was covered in the survey. With regard to the Chancellor’s birthday – Merz will be 70 on Tuesday – 52 percent of respondents thought that it would be better if the Chancellor was younger. However, 45 percent of those surveyed believed that this position could still be carried out well even at that age.

Forsa interviewed 1,002 people for the survey on November 6 and 7.
