The new unit aims to detect, intercept and shoot down illegal drones

After increasing reports of illegal drone flights in Germany, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is now implementing an official drone defense plan.

Dobrindt told “Bild am Sonntag”: “The increasing number of drones and cyber attacks is a danger of a new hybrid threat, to which we are reacting decisively. We are arming ourselves against digital threats on the Internet and against drone threats from the air.”

The federal government is investing 100 million euros in modern drone defense in the short term. The package includes radar detection, jamming technology and interceptor drones to detect dangerous aircraft early and eliminate them safely.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the task of the federal police is to detect, intercept and shoot down. The new drone defense unit (130 additional police forces) will become operational in December. The units will be used in a decentralized manner around important airports, in capital cities, and at security-related objects. They can be deployed nationwide using helicopters.
