The sporting world mourns the loss of one of cycling’s greatest ever. Australian Paige Greco is only 28 years old.
Paralympic champion Paige Greco of Australia has died at the age of 28. This was announced by the Australian Paralympic Committee and the UCI World Cycling Federation. Hence, a “sudden medical incident” occurred at his home in Adelaide on Sunday, which ultimately led to his death. Greco won Australia’s first gold medal at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, and he also won four world championship titles in track and field.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of Paige’s death. Paige was an extraordinary athlete who achieved incredible feats at the highest level of our sport,” said Marne Fechner, CEO of AusCycling: “Moreover, she touched the lives of everyone around her with her positive spirit and courageous attitude.” Greco suffers from cerebral palsy and therefore struggles with movement disorders and muscle stiffness on the right side of his body.
At the World Road Cycling Championships in August he won a bronze medal in the C3 road race, and Greco also competed at the World Track Championships in Rio in October – and competed against, among others, German Paralympic champion Maike Hausberger. “Rest in peace champion,” the Trier native wrote on his Instagram story and posted a heartbroken: “Still hard to believe. We just rode together at the World Cup in Rio last month.”
