The Pope speaks for the first time about the case of the bishop of Cadiz: “We must let the investigations continue” | Society

Pope Leo

“At the moment, yes, he remains in office, but each case has a series of well-established protocols and he insists on his innocence. An investigation has been opened and it must be allowed to continue; depending on the results there will be consequences”, explained the American pontiff responding to the media as he left the Castel Gandolfo residence.

This Monday the leaders of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (EEC) met with the Pope. Its president, Luis Argüello, assured that Leo XIV has been informed of the case and that the bishop’s resignation will probably be accepted, even if the dates have not been specified.

EL PAÍS reports that Zornoza has been under investigation for four months by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith for an alleged crime of sexual abuse against a minor when he was a priest in Getafe (Madrid) in the 1990s.

Zornoza presented his resignation as bishop 15 months ago, when it was his turn to turn 75, the retirement age for prelates, but it has not yet been accepted by the pope.
