The professional seducer of young tourists, or how games of love and power mix in the tropics

During a trip to Peru, Juliette Roguet, then a sociology student, developed a romantic relationship with a Peruvian citizen. He then discovered that he was a “brichero” (a professional seducer) and this type of story is not unusual. Rather, it is a real system, which adheres to codes, strategies… with the intention of attracting monetary donations from Western tourists.

He then investigated the professional seducers of these young female travelers, and defended a sociology thesis on this subject, which became the source of the book. Enjoy the exoticpublished on November 6 (La Découverte, 235 pages, 22 euros).

Written from around twenty interviews with European women aged 20 to 40, numbering in the dozens bricherosand through two years of experience in Lima, Cuzco or Arequipa, this research analyzes what is at stake in the relationship between tourists and local residents. When lovers don’t play as equals, and the power game between men and women is turned upside down.

Men trying to seduce female tourists… It seems as old as travel. Why is this the subject of investigation, and why in Peru?
