It was only in October that Pakistan and Afghanistan fought fiercely in the border area – now there is a risk of another escalation. The Taliban accused Pakistan of launching another attack that killed several people.

According to the Taliban government, at least ten people were killed in Pakistani attacks in the Afghan border region of Khost. The victims were nine children and one woman, Afghan government spokesman Sabihullah Mujahid said via the online service X.

They were killed in an attack on a residential building. Four people were injured in further attacks in the eastern border areas of Kunar and Paktika.

The attack followed a suicide attack on military facilities in the Pakistani border region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Three security guards were killed and eleven others injured in an attack on the headquarters of Pakistan’s border guard unit on Monday. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistani state television reported that he was carried out by Afghans.

The conflict has intensified recently

Pakistani President Asif Sardari blamed the TTP militia, which is ideologically linked to the Taliban. Since the return of the radical Islamic group the Taliban to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, there have been repeated conflicts between units in the two neighboring countries, which intensified in October. The trigger was an explosion in Kabul, which the Taliban blamed on Pakistan.

According to the UN, more than 70 people were killed in a week of fighting in the border region, including dozens of Afghan civilians. The two neighboring countries finally agreed to a ceasefire, but have not been able to agree on the details. Twelve people were killed in an attack on a court in Islamabad two weeks ago. The TTP militia claimed responsibility for the attack.
