Surprise for 250 passengers: A train driver in North Rhine-Westphalia was apparently very drunk while driving a regional express train. The trip ended suddenly – the fire department had to intervene.
A train driver apparently drove a fully loaded regional express train through North Rhine-Westphalia with a blood alcohol level of nearly three-thousandths.
The train driver braked in the middle of the track
This was noticed because the 53-year-old man did not let the train stop at the Rheda-Wiedenbrück station as planned, but instead continued to drive and brake on the open track, as announced by the federal police in Münster on Monday. Previously there had been “irregularities in closing the doors”.
Federal police forces detained the man
During an unscheduled stop, a flight attendant noticed the smell of alcohol on the driver and prevented the train from continuing. Federal police forces detained the man. A breath alcohol test showed a level of 2.67 per mille. Because the man showed signs of an extraordinary psychological situation, he was admitted to the clinic. None of the approximately 250 passengers were injured. Firefighters evacuated trains between Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Oelde.
