After the US House of Representatives, the US Senate also supported the release of the Epstein files. Now it’s US President Donald Trump’s turn.
After the House of Representatives, the US Senate decided to forward a bill to release the Epstein files to President Trump without debate. The text of the law still has to be officially sent from the DPR to the second chamber. The Senate concluded its session on Tuesday and formal succession is expected to take place on Wednesday. Republicans have majorities in both chambers. They have refused to release documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in custody in 2019, for months.
If Trump signs the decree, US judicial documents could be made public. But the Justice Department is allowed to withhold documents that could harm ongoing investigations. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that there were more important things than the Epstein debate. “I don’t care when the Senate passes the House bill, whether it’s tonight or another time in the near future. I just don’t want Republicans to take their attention away from all the success we’ve had.”
According to the Epstein Records Transparency Act (EFTA), Attorney General Pam Bondi must release “all unclassified records, documents, communications and investigative materials” in the Epstein case no later than 30 days after it is passed.
However, there are exceptions – for example for material that “would jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution.” According to the text of the law, the US government may not publish information that limits the privacy of abuse victims or images and videos of abuse.
According to the US justice system, Epstein abused girls and young women for years and referred them to celebrities. He is closely connected to New York society and also socializes with Donald Trump. He had long resisted making the files public, but changed course at the weekend and dropped a hint about former US President Bill Clinton.
Trump has denied all allegations regarding the affair and described the debate as a Democratic smear campaign. He recently stated that their “radical left-wing lunatics” had concocted a hoax that should now be abandoned.
