Around Munich
Sightseeing in the snow: Winter is waiting here
November 21, 2025 – 14:11Reading time: 2 minutes

Winter has officially arrived in Munich. Although there is still little snow in the city, the surrounding area has been transformed into a winter backdrop.
Even though some small, fluffy snowflakes occasionally make their way to the center of Munich, they still persist. But even though there is no snow in the Bavarian capital itself, you only need to drive a little further and you can immerse yourself in the world of winter. Be it snow hiking or skiing – it can be done all around Munich.
Lake Tegernsee is about an hour’s drive near the Alps. As you can easily see from the on-site webcam, there is already a light layer of snow here. Two popular hikes from the Sonnenbichl in Bad Wiessee provide views of the winter landscape around Lake Tegernsee.
The hike to Aueralm is easy and also suitable for families. The climb takes about one and a half hours. The moderately difficult climb of Fockenstein is a little more demanding. The climb takes about three hours and passes through Aueralm over rocks to the summit.
Another way to see Lake Tegernsee from above is to climb or take a gondola to Wallberg. The start was in Rottach-Egern. From here an easy hiking trail with a continuous incline leads to the top. From the top you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tegernsee and the surrounding Alps. If you take the Wallbergbahn to the top, you can do an easy hike from there.
Ski fans will have to travel further if they want to be active. Many of the slopes around Munich are still hibernating, but the official ski season starts in the Allgäu this weekend (November 23). At Söllereck in Oberstdorf everything is ready to disembark. Just five days later, on November 28, skiing began at the Zugspitze.
