“There is finally a chance to make real progress towards a good peace” in Ukraine, according to Emmanuel Macron

At the opening of a video conference of the “coalition of the willing” supporting Kyiv, Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Tuesday that there is “there is finally a chance to make real progress towards a good peace” between Ukraine and Russia.

“But an absolute condition for good peace is a series of very strong security guarantees, and not just guarantees on paper.”warned the French president, noting that the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, would also join the meeting of a coalition of mostly European countries that wants to provide these guarantees to Ukraine.

“Ukraine has lost much of its promise due to successive Russian aggressions, and therefore strong guarantees are a necessity”he insisted.

This declaration comes at a time when diplomacy is once again in full swing to try to find a negotiated outcome to the conflict following the publication of the American plan which has been the subject of negotiations in recent days. “We are clearly at a crucial moment. Negotiations are gaining new momentum and we must capitalize on this momentum”Emmanuel Macron estimates.

“I welcome the fact that the meeting in Geneva on November 23 allowed for open and constructive discussions between Ukraine and the United States.”he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later conveyed to his colleagues in this coalition, which includes more than 30 countries, the results of discussions held in Geneva on the American plan. And also how member states can provide it “guarantee” security, explained the French president.

This morning, on RTL, the head of state predicted this “The first thing that will protect Ukraine is its own army”while the latest plan proposed by the United States specifically stipulates that Kiev accepts restrictions on its armed forces.

“The first guarantee for Ukraine and, for us, is a strong force. So what do we do? We manage their training, equipment and capacity to deploy in the coming months and years”said the president. The second security guarantee will come from the existing reinsurer “away from the front zone”. “There were British, French and Turkish soldiers who, on the day peace was signed, therefore not in the context of war, were there to do training and security”he explained.
