A nighttime Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, the country’s second most populous city before the invasion launched by Moscow in February 2022, left four people dead and 17 injured, the mayor announced late Sunday into Monday. “There are 17 people injured. Four people are dead,” said Igor Terekhov, mayor of this town near the Russian border.
“Despite peace negotiations” regarding Ukraine, “Russian troops attacked residential buildings,” he added. According to emergency services, the attack was carried out using drones, destroying buildings and causing fires in three residential buildings and civil infrastructure.
Russia targets its country almost every day using drones or missiles. Energy infrastructure has been a major target, raising fears of a severe winter in Ukraine. Kyiv, for its part, regularly targets oil depots and refineries and other installations on the Russian side.
Ukrainian, American and European officials met in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss Donald Trump’s plan to end the conflict in Ukraine. An initial version of the document aroused opposition from Kiev and its European allies.
But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was “very optimistic” about the possibility of reaching a deal “very quickly”, and cited “tremendous progress” during negotiations in Switzerland.
