Torre dei Conti, as it was two years ago: from cracks to “not very resistant” floors.

A “factory”, belonging to Torre dei Conti, with «various rift phenomena»namely cracks and lesions between structures and materials, which have been reported for many years. At least since August 8 2023, when the restoration project technical report was submitted.

Photographic documentation is attached to the crack pattern survey. One hundred shots, between the wall and the attic (called the “ceiling” in the assessment) of the six floors of the Imperial Fora medieval building, which partially collapsed on Monday 3 November. A construction site where there are about ten workers. One of them, Octav Stroici, 66, lost his life after being under the rubble for eleven hours.

The warning

And it was a construction site that started despite several warnings. In 2023, in a confidential document visible to «IlSole24ore.com», highlighted «loss of solidity and continuity of masonry” in many areas. But also a “lack of connection” between wall levels. This damage was caused in part by “many transformations that have occurred over the centuries”.

Poor floor durability

Then there is, to be precise, floor and its “poor resistance”. The report highlighted that, although they had “undergone a consolidation intervention through strengthening with the addition of beams to the intrados”, instability phenomena continued to emerge. All highlighted by photographic files that are an integral part of the technical report.

This area has become a red zone

The fear now is that further failures are possible. Therefore, the area was changed to a “red zone” since November 4. The ordinance was signed by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri to avoid pedestrian traffic but also to evacuate some families through the Tor dei Conti.
