On the ground, peace still seems far away. A new Russian offensive on the night of 24–25 November hit Kyiv, with heavy casualties: 7 dead and 19 wounded. Russia was also hit in the area near Lutsk.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Donald Trump would like to believe it. “I think we are getting closer to a deal, we’ll see”said the American president. Despite his optimism, Ukraine’s ally Britain believes it has arrived at a more favorable plan for Kyiv. According to American media, Ukraine will gain concessions compared to the first version of the text: the maximum number of troops will be increased from 600,000 to 800,000, and integration into NATO will no longer be excluded. But is Russia ready to accept this new plan?
“At the moment it is clear that there is no Russian desire for a ceasefire. And the comments made by the Russian Foreign Minister in the last hours, following discussions in Geneva, have demonstrated this,” explained Emmanuel Macron in an interview. After facing reluctance from Ukraine, Donald Trump could counter Vladimir Putin’s reluctance. Étienne Leenhardt, editor-in-chief of France Télévisions’ foreign service, explained: “The only reason that could push the Russian president to change his mind is if Donald Trump, encouraged by the presidents of Ukraine and European countries, finally admits that, in this matter, there is an aggressor and there is an attacker.”
To continue negotiations, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he was ready to go to Florida to meet Donald Trump.
