In 2024, 364,993 people were injured in traffic accidents in Germany and 2,770 people died. About a third of these fatal accidents occur in urban areas. But which roads are the most dangerous in Germany?

It was investigated current accident studies from insurance provider Allianz Direct. For the investigation, accident atlases from federal and state statistical offices were evaluated throughout 2024. Three of the 10 dangerous roads were in Hanover, two in Hamburg and two in Berlin.

► Very dangerous in the top ranking of accidents: Hanauer Landstrasse in Frankfurt (Main). With a total of 59 accidents resulting in injuries, arterial roads ranked a dismal first. Twelve of them were there Accident ending in serious injuries in 2024, far more than other roads with the same number of accidents.

In second place is Kieler Straße in Hamburg, which still holds the top spot in 2022. It also recorded 59 accidents, but only four involved serious injuries – which is why it ranks slightly lower.

Right behind: Vahrenwalder Straße in Hanover. With 59 accidents, including two people seriously injured, it remains the most dangerous road in Lower Saxony. In fourth place is Trierer Straße in Aachen, which was the most dangerous street in Germany last year.

► Striking: Vahrenwalder Straße (Hannover) and Frankfurter Allee (Berlin, now ranked 9th) are included in the three most recent studies (2022, 2023, 2024) a regular place among the ten most dangerous roads. Perhaps this is an impetus for the responsible authorities to examine these accident-prone spots for viable options. However, most traffic accidents are caused by human error.

Source: Allianz Direct. For the same total number of accidents, roads with a higher number of serious injuries and deaths have a higher ranking. The roads are divided by postal code to reduce the influence of road length and to identify accident spots more precisely.
