A 73-year-old man was seriously injured in an accident on the island of Usedom. According to the police, the elderly citizen was probably driving his car without the lights on and was going too fast when he left the country road near Korswandt (West Pomerania-Greifswald district) in the dark. On Wednesday he hit several traffic signs with his car, crashed into a tree and finally came to rest in a ditch.
Firefighters had to extricate the trapped man from the car. A rescue helicopter flew the 73-year-old man to the clinic. When the crash was recorded, officers noticed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Blood samples have been ordered, he said. The driver is now being investigated for malicious obstruction of road traffic.
