Tragic accident in Ecuador: 21 people died after a bus fell into a ravine

The crash of a passenger bus into a ravine in Ecuador on Sunday killed 21 people, local authorities announced on Monday. The vehicle fell into a ravine while traveling in the Andes region, on a road connecting the cities of Guaranda and Ambato, in the center of the country.

“Unfortunately, the death toll stands at 21 dead and 40 injured,” Ecuador’s emergency services said in a message to the press. Authorities, who have not yet named a possible cause of the crash, late Sunday reported a death toll of 12 dead and 10 injured.

In Ecuador, one person dies every four hours in traffic accidents, which is one of the leading causes of death in the South American country, according to the National Road Traffic Administration. In 2024, more than 21,000 traffic accidents were recorded there, causing around 2,300 deaths and 18,000 injuries.
