The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, a loyal ally of President Donald Trump, assured, Monday, November 17, that Washington “never asked” used these islands to launch attacks against Venezuela. This statement came when a contingent of American Marines was carrying out exercises in this country which is located about ten kilometers from the coast of Venezuela, officially as part of an anti-narcotics operation.
“The United States has NEVER asked to use our territory to launch attacks against the Venezuelan people. The territory of Trinidad and Tobago will NEVER be used to launch attacks against the Venezuelan people”wrote Kamla Persad-Bissessar to Agence France-Presse (AFP) via Whatsapp message about the military drills.
This maneuver is described as“not responsible” by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro who considers him a ” threat “ American Settlement in the Caribbean. On Monday, he said he was ready to discuss “one on one” with Donald Trump, who mentioned possible discussions with his partners. “In America, anyone who wants to talk to Venezuela, (We) will speak (with himher)“face to face”, one on one. Without any problems. What we cannot allow (…) what happened was that Christians in Venezuela were bombed and massacred”Maduro said, in response to a letter from an American pastor on his weekly show on Venezuelan public television.
Military exercises are scheduled to last until Friday. It was the second attack in less than a month between Washington and the small English-speaking island nation, while the United States has been hot and cold over possible attacks on Venezuelan territory. Since August, Washington has maintained a significant military presence in the Caribbean, including half a dozen warships, to officially combat drug trafficking to America.
Regional tensions
“Trinidad and Tobago will not participate in any actions that could harm the Venezuelan people. We continue to maintain peaceful relations with the Venezuelan people”added the Prime Minister of Trinidad. “The citizens and infrastructure of Trinidad and Tobago are NOT in danger because we are NOT participating in any aggression against the people of Venezuela”underlined the Prime Minister.
Ms Persad-Bissessar also said she supported the idea of discussions between Mr Trump and Mr Maduro: “The best way to solve problems is through dialogue. » However, he emphasized: “There are many pressing problems. There is the problem of drug trafficking, drug trafficking and human trafficking. There is the problem of elections that are not free and fair. There is the problem of dangerous gangs causing chaos in other countries.”
Since ascending the throne in May, Persad-Bissessar has increased the number of declarations hostile to Venezuelan rule, and has made the fight against Venezuelan immigration one of his hobbies, often equating it with the island nation’s high crime rate.
Former Prime Minister (2015-2025) Keith Rowley criticized this exercise: “At a time when America is threatening to invade Venezuela, to destroy Venezuela, America is asking us to do certain things, it is our sovereignty to say that this is not in our interest and to reject it.”he said during a press conference.
