Trump called for an investigation into ties between Epstein and several members of the Democratic Party, including former President Clinton

LThe US Department of Justice will investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged ties to JP Morgan bank and Democratic figures, including former President Bill Clinton, at Donald Trump’s express request. United States Attorney General Pam Bondi announced this Friday that Jay Clayton, federal prosecutor in Manhattan and former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, America’s market authority, will lead the investigation.

The US president’s request came two days after a congressional committee uncovered thousands of documents that raised new questions about the relationship between Donald Trump and the former financier, who was found hanging in his cell in 2019 before his trial for sex trafficking of minors.

Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee in particular cited a 2019 email addressed to author Michael Wolff, in which they said Jeffrey Epstein “explicitly stated that Donald Trump ‘knew about the girls.’ “Trump is clearly and desperately trying to divert attention from his presence in Epstein’s emails,” said Alan Rozenshtein, a law professor at the University of Minnesota and a former Justice Department attorney.

In addition to Bill Clinton, who frequented Jeffrey Epstein in the early 2000s, Donald Trump asked the Justice Department to investigate former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn social network founder Reid Hoffman, a major Democratic Party donor. “Epstein is a Democrat and he is a Democratic Party problem, not a Republican Party problem!” » said the American president on his Truth Social network. “Don’t waste your time on Trump. I have a country to govern!” he added.

Around 20,000 documents related to the case were made public

Bill Clinton, Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman, named in some 20,000 documents related to the affair made public on Wednesday by a watchdog commission, have expressed regret over their association with Jeffrey Epstein but have always denied knowledge of any sexual misconduct of which he is accused. So far there is no evidence to show the involvement of the three Democratic figures in the sex trafficking case.

“We regret any relationship we may have had with this man, but we did not help him commit his heinous acts. We ended our relationship with him years before he was arrested for sex trafficking,” JP Morgan responded in a statement. The bank, where Jeffrey Epstein was a client between 1998 and 2013, paid $290 million in 2023 to some of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims to end allegations that it ignored internal warnings about suspicions targeting the financier.

Before being convicted in 2008 of seducing and pimping minors, Jeffrey Epstein worked and had relationships with many figures, including the former Prince Andrew, who lost his royal title after being proven to have ties to the financier. Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were friends in the 1990s and 2000s.

The American president has consistently and vehemently denied any knowledge of the former financier’s crimes, but the case continues to embarrass him with the regular publication of documents regarding their relationship and while his own camp suspects his government of hiding information. He has declined to answer reporters’ questions in recent days about Congress’ latest revelations.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote next week on legislation that would require the Justice Department to make public all the documents it has about Jeffrey Epstein. The bill is expected to pass, despite efforts in recent weeks by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to block a vote. However, the text still needs to be approved by the Senate to force the ministry to take action.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted last month, nine in ten Republicans remain approving of Donald Trump’s conduct in the White House, but only four in ten said they approve of his handling of the Epstein dossier.
