In a radical and sudden change of approach, US President Donald Trump called on Republican lawmakers to vote in favor of publishing documents regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case, saying he had “nothing to hide”. Epstein was a notorious financier accused of sexually exploiting dozens of underage girls, and committed suicide in prison in 2019.
In recent months the case has put Trump in deep trouble, and he doesn’t know how to handle it: for a long time he tried to divert attention, not always effectively, while now he seems to have decided to release the material. The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill this week that would force the government to make the documents public, and dozens of Republicans are likely to support the bill along with Democrats. In short, there are numbers that agree.
Last week, new information regarding the Epstein case was released. Among them are several private letters, obtained by a congressional commission of inquiry, in which the financier wrote, among other things, that Trump “knew about women” and “spent hours at my house.” It’s not unknown, given the well-documented ties between Trump and Epstein in the 1990s and 2000s, but the case has become so relevant and present in the debate that every little bit of news matters to Trump. The president also directed the Justice Department to launch a focused investigation other powerful people who could be named in the document, especially those close to the Democratic Party.
