The attacks will spread to all NATO membersTrump establishes security guarantees for Ukraine
US President Trump expands his peace plan for Ukraine: He offers Kiev security guarantees based on the NATO model. But the consequence was painful concessions from Ukraine.
US President Trump’s peace plan provides security guarantees for Ukraine, based on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. This was reported by the US news portal “Axios”. Therefore, security guarantees will require the US and its European partners to view an attack on Ukraine as an attack on the entirety of NATO and take appropriate action.
The 28-point plan was announced on Wednesday. According to consistent media reports, this agreement only touches on the topic of security guarantees: it only contains the promise of “reliable security guarantees” for Ukraine. At the same time, it was stipulated that, in addition to the territories occupied by Russia, Kiev would also cede part of the country currently under Ukrainian control.
In addition to this 28-point plan, Ukraine should have another draft contract, according to “Axios”. The draft stipulates that any “significant, deliberate and sustained armed attack” by Russia against Ukraine in the future “will be considered an attack on the peace and security of the trans-Atlantic community.” The US and its allies must then intervene – militarily if necessary. The guarantee will initially be limited to ten years, with the option to extend.
A senior White House official confirmed the document’s authenticity, according to the report. Although the proposal still needs to be coordinated with European partners, the US already sees it as a significant step – both for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and for Ukraine’s long-term security.
There are no NATO troops in Ukraine
For the first time under the Trump administration, the US government is ready to provide real security guarantees to Ukraine. This has been Zelensky’s main desire in all peace negotiations to date.
However, the guarantees were part of a deal that required Ukraine to make painful concessions. About a fifth of Ukraine’s territory is already occupied by Russian troops. According to American and Russian ideas, Ukraine would cede more territory. Ukraine will also have to reduce the size of its army significantly. The plan calls for a maximum of 600,000 troops. There will be no NATO troops on Ukrainian territory.
According to the plan, Ukraine will be allowed to join the EU, but not NATO. Russia will be reintegrated into the international community – including amnesty and lifting of sanctions.
