US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to reduce US tariffs on agricultural imports such as beef, bananas, coffee and tomatoes.
On Friday, a published decree read: “I have determined that certain agricultural products should not be subject to the reciprocal tariffs imposed in April.” The exception comes into effect the day before.
The list includes products that cannot be grown or can only be grown in the United States in quantities insufficient to meet demand, such as coffee, tea, bananas and other exotic fruits.
The minimum reciprocal rate is ten percent
In April, the US President imposed reciprocal tariffs of at least 10 percent on most products imported into the US to reduce the country’s trade deficit and support local production. However, these tariffs also impact goods that are not grown on US soil.
The Trump administration is now under pressure from voters struggling with the rising cost of living. The Republican Party recently suffered crushing defeats in local elections.
