Trump’s tariffs on coffee, bananas and beef are felt by Americans every day at the supermarket checkout. After losing three elections, the president has now stepped down. However, the White House cited other reasons for the change.

US President Donald Trump withdrew some tariffs on food imports from abroad. The White House released a list of affected products, including coffee, tea, bananas, tomatoes, beef, cocoa, spices, fruit juice. Special fertilizers are also listed.

Trump is under political pressure due to high food prices in the US. Recently, the focus has been on rising beef prices. For example, the price of ground beef has continued to increase every month since the start of the year, according to data from the US Census Bureau. The US government says that the US itself does not produce enough of certain agricultural products. Therefore, many trade agreements and ongoing negotiations concern countries that export large quantities of these agricultural products.

As president, Trump implemented an aggressive tariff policy. After starting his second term in January, he imposed additional import tariffs on many countries, some of them very high. The US government accused these countries of taking advantage of years of imbalance in customs regulations to the detriment of the US.

Democrat: He sells it as progress

In recent months, many countries have renegotiated with the Trump administration and finalized trade agreements, which the Republican considers his personal success. However, many economic experts emphasize that basically there are only parties who are harmed by such radical tariff policies. In the US, it is normal citizens who suffer the most from these policies, because they pay for these policies in higher consumer prices.

The move reflects a clear shift from Trump. He has long maintained that his import tariffs would not trigger inflation. The move follows a series of Democratic wins in state and local elections where the cost of living has been a key issue. Senior Democratic Representative Richard Neal said the Trump administration was trying to “put out a fire of its own making and sell it as progress.” The administration has finally publicly admitted that Trump’s trade war has raised people’s costs of living. Trump recently emphasized that the price increases were triggered by the policies of his predecessor Joe Biden.
