TV subscriptions for football fans: Anyone wanting to watch the Champions League from 2027 may have to pay more

Starting in 2027, football fans will again need multiple subscriptions to watch live broadcasts of the Champions League. As a joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC), UC3 has sold media rights for the 2027/28 to 2030/31 seasons to US broadcasters Paramount+ and Amazon. Amazon Prime Video was the first to confirm this.

Top games on Tuesdays will air on Paramount+ starting in 2027, on Wednesdays Amazon will show top games and will then offer 19 instead of 17 games per season. Paramount+ also bought all the remaining games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Endgame on Netflix

The finale will air on Netflix. Only if the German team reaches the final will the match be shown on free-to-air television in the country. Several media outlets have previously reported on the new distribution, including the Times and Bild in English.

Paramount was the big surprise of the rights award, as the US provider was already represented in the German market, but did not show any sports. Paramount had previously acquired Champions League rights for the US market.

Amazon has long offered sport and currently shows top first-class games on Tuesdays – and will switch to Wednesdays from 2027. This also applies to the UK and Italy, where Prime already shows first-class games for its customers.

DAZN takes over the Europa League

Streaming service DAZN, which currently broadcasts most Champions League matches, went home empty-handed in the first-class auction, but could continue to show European Cup matches: the Europa League and Conference League TV rights were awarded to the online sports broadcaster. It will remain the property of the RTL Group until 2027.

The current distribution in Germany will only last until the end of next season. Amazon showcases top games on Prime Video on Tuesdays. All other matches will be broadcast on the DAZN Internet channel, which also costs money, and fans can only watch the final for free on ZDF.

There are four major live rights packages in the auction conducted by US agency Relevent on behalf of UC3. Newly offered is a TV package with today’s best matches for worldwide broadcast. However, these rights are not sold.

For Relevent, as the successor to the long-term marketing team, this is the first tender in Europe. The agency and its London-based football subsidiary started a bidding competition in mid-October.

How much is the subscription fee?

Champions League newcomer Paramount+’s cheapest subscription is currently available for 5.99 euros per month, the most expensive costs 12.99 euros. How prices will develop – with the best football deals – cannot be predicted with certainty.

Prime Video is included in Amazon Prime membership; the current cost is 8.99 euros per month or 89.90 euros per year. There are also discount offers, for example for students and trainees.

On Sky, a one-year subscription to the Bundesliga currently costs 29.99 euros per month and also includes the 2nd league. DFB Cup not included. For this, customers also need a sports subscription for a total of 34.99 euros per month.

On DAZN, customers require an Unlimited subscription for Bundesliga matches. It costs 44.99 euros per month with a streaming provider or 34.99 euros per month with an annual contract. Apart from the domestic league, there are other leagues included, but starting in 2027 the Champions League will no longer be included.

Sky and DAZN can also subscribe together. On a one-year contract, the package currently costs 64.98 euros per month when booked via Sky.
