Two Germans died in a snowstorm in Patagonia

Rescuers search for tourists in Torres del Paine National Park who died in a sudden snowstorm.

Five tourists, including two Germans, died in a snowstorm in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. The fatalities also included two Mexicans and one British citizen, José Antonio Ruiz, representative of the Magallanes region, told reporters on Tuesday.

The crash site was difficult to reach because of heavy snowfall, Ruiz said. According to the government, wind speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour sometimes occur. Spring has just begun in the southern tip of Chile.

Snow storm takes tourists by surprise

Tourists were reportedly surprised by a snowstorm as they explored the national park. Ruiz had previously announced the deaths of the two Mexicans and said that seven other park visitors were still missing. Four missing people were found alive.

Torres del Paine: natural paradise in southern Chile

Torres del Paine is one of Chile’s most famous national parks and has been recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 1978. The three needle-shaped granite mountains in the center of the park, which are about 2,700 meters high, are especially famous. According to official figures, around 600,000 tourists visit the region every year.
